In an artists depiction of Leonard Calvert greeting Indians along with his 200 English settlers, in 1634, a Jesuit priest is depicted on the left with hand and arm extended celebrating Mass. The settlement occured at the Potomac River in Maryland and the colony was conceived as a haven for English and Irish Catholics. America's first act which guaranteed religious freedom was enacted in Maryland thanks in large part to the Calvert's.
